The handcrafted smartphone, built like no otherBerlin - 22/2/2021
The Carbon 1 MK II is the only hand crafted smartphone in the world today making each stunning device as individual as the next.
Every year 1.4 billion smartphones are sold. Think about that for a moment, that’s enough for 1 on every 6 people in the world-changing their handset every year. What’s worse is the UN states that 80% of these won’t be recycled.
Where’s the respect? How can we keep plundering the planets resources this way to make throwaway devices that do not last?
At Carbon Mobile, we do things differently. Starting from designing products that are built with not just respect for consumer desires but also what the planet needs.
We believe the future of connected devices will be made from composite materials like carbon fiber. Their ability to drive forward miniaturization in the form of thinner, lighter and more durable tech is overlooked by the big players in their insatiable demand for cheap mass production at speed.
It takes a new player to explore these materials. To start small and innovate with both the materials and processes required to make them compete at scale with cheap, damaging plastics and hard to recover metals.
Through our continual research and development, Carbon Mobile’s engineers have already reduced production times for our carbon fiber-based products from 3 hours in 2017 to just 30 mins in 2021.
Today, skilled craftsmanship still plays a vital role in the production of each individual Carbon 1 MK II; ensuring the value is not just in the material itself but the attention to detail invested into every device.
Unlike cheap injection molded plastics or pressed metals, all Carbon 1 units are unique. Using only the finest carbon fiber material sourced from Germany, the carbon fiber body begins life with a skilled engineer hand cutting the material and carefully preparing and monitoring the molding process throughout.
The result is a beautifully crafted device, each one as individual as the next.
Respect for the future
As our research and development continues and the scale of our operation increases, we expect in the near future to fully automate and remove the hands from our processes. However, the respect for the materials and the planet they are sourced from remains in the DNA and we’ll continue to drive forward the more durable and greener tech of tomorrow.
